Going camping with the kids? It can be a real exciting proposition for many, but only if planned well. For most of us camping with the family almost always is fun, especially as the kids add to the zing to the party and fun activities one pursues outdoors. However, without a proper plan and groundwork, camping with children can be disastrous, and can render you as well as the kids demoralized and even sick when worse!
Certain tips can iron out the creases on your forehead while going camping with the kids and family. Listed below are some for a quick reference:
Weather conditions - Remember that even high altitude camping sites can give your kids bad sunburns. So make sure you know about the weather conditions prior to reaching the site. Winters can be bitter and cold outdoors, with flimsy tents making your kids really vulnerable to the weather. So make sure you have adequate supplies, clothes and heaters arranged to fight the cold. Same goes with hot weather conditions, where you should have the children well supplied with glucose and water.
Stay safe - Staying safe is not just keeping your kids within the tent. Children are bound to run around, so keep them updated about poison ivy or cactus plants around the area. If possible, draw perimeter which they should not cross, making it easy tosspot and round them up at regular intervals. Also an adult should keep company with the kids in the tent at night.
Games and fun - Even if you find the landscapes and the natural beauty spellbinding, the kids may not think so. This calls for fun activities and games to be arranged, so that they do not find it difficult to adapt to the new home, even if temporarily. Add extra backpacks to carry toys, books and painting material, the latter being coming especially handy at beautiful terrains. You can also play games of Frisbee or soccer, albeit keeping an eye out for possible situations where they could hurt themselves.
Be prepared - Be prepared for unpredictable mishaps or situations while out camping with your family. Staying well supplied with medicine, food and emergency supplies may well aid your case in such scenarios.
Make them sleep well - Kids are most intrigued by sleeping arrangements in tents or outdoors. So it is your duty to make sure that this is their night to remember. Arrange for spacious sleeping arrangements, and if possible, add padding to their beds to make them more comfy. While sleeping outdoors, an adult should sleep in with the kids or should keep checking at regular intervals to avoid possible problems.
Once you are off camping, always remember that kids expect such exercises to be much more fun and adrenaline-filled than the adults. So even if it is sweltering hot or unexpectedly cold, you can rely on kids to jump about the camping site nevertheless. And if you have all the gear at hand, and are not so drained of energy yourself, camping with kids and family could be an experience for a lifetime - even for a veteran camper like you!
