Ideas for an outdoor treasure hunt

A nature scavenger hunt is a great addition to your outdoor activities for kids. Let's face it, who doesn't like to go on a scavenger hunt? They are experiential in nature and get the kids out, moving around and exploring their surroundings.

There are several things to keep in mind when starting to prepare your outdoor scavenger hunt.

First: Pick a location that is appropriate for your group. Make sure that it is in a safe space. Make the boundaries larger for older kids and smaller for the younger ones.

Second: Decide if they will go looking for a list of objects that are already in the location such as a leaf or a pine cone or if you will be hiding objects in the playing area. You can also decide to do a combination of the two.

Third: Make your list. Examples of items found outside include: a leaf, a pebble, three types of grass, a feather, smooth bark, rough bark, a ladybug, etc. Examples of things that you can hide in the area include: a crayon, a comb, a lifesaver, a plastic cup, a book, a tube of toothpaste, salt shaker, a votive candle, etc.

Fourth: Gather together your lists and anything you might be hiding and get the site prepared. Contact any park authorities if you need permission to have the hunt on another organization's property.

Fifth: Send the kids exploring on their outdoor scavenger hunt. Be sure to have enough adults present to supervise, especially if they are younger kids.

Sixth: Have prizes handy for the kids. Be sure to bring along water and a shade tent if the area is really sunny so that the kids are hydrated and not too hot.

Seventh: Always end your outdoor activities for kids with them wanting more. It's proof that they are having fun and still engaged in the activity.

And of course, have fun with it! Use these outdoor scavenger hunt lists to supplement this guide as you create your own fun activity for kids.

Outdoor Guide For Kids by Gerry Martin - Bangalore Camping

India's first adventurer on National Geographic channel (remember Croc Chronicles or Snake Wranglers?), wildlife expert and herpetologist Gerald 'Gerry' Martin has been wild at heart since the time he was a kid. He grew up in a farmhouse, surrounded by animals and nature and at 17 started assisting the legendary Romulus Whitaker at the Madras Crocodile Bank. In fact, he was the bank's youngest curator. From watching 31 baby cobras hatch in his room during a project to looking for crocodiles on camera, Martin has done it all.

Today he shares his love for adventure with children and educates them about nature and animals through camps and workshops. He tells MetroMela how parents can get city kids away from the TV and closer to nature and even shares some of his favorite outdoor destinations. Read on...Parents can organize all kinds of outdoor trips, instead of just visits to a mall or movie theatre. Even a walk in Cubbon Park, a trip to Bannerghatta National Park, sitting by any of the new lakes, doing stuff in the garden, making bird boxes, bird feeders, etc., could make a huge difference to children. The outdoors need not be compartmentalized into something you see when you're out on a trip.

When you do go on a trip, Bangalore is surrounded by beautiful and magnificent wilderness, forests and hills. Explore! Kids are intrinsically allured by pets. All we need to do is to nurture that. If you have a pet at home, teach the kids to be responsible for it by example. If the pet brings joy to the parents, they need to share that with their children.

If you are taking the kids out on a trek, remember that kids need small stretches in their activities. There's a fine line between adventure and misadventure. Ensuring that the end emotion is a positive one is imperative to the process of developing a strong interest and passion in children about the outdoors. Some areas around Bangalore Children may be adventure trips for families. I personally have some favorites as in Masinagudi Jungle Retreat, Chikmagalur and Hunkal Woods Farms in Bannerghatta Geedee here!

Gerry Martin - BangaloreKids are often of insects, reptiles, lizards and even fear. My experience is mostly due to fear and it comes from others around them - parents, friends and others. All we need is for us to maintain our fears and not to transfer to our children. Forthose who are already afraid, it helps to do things slowly - short and gentle exposures to the animals that they fear. Building knowledge about the animals also helps a lot.

Gardening is a great idea to help kids connect with nature. It builds a strong connect, gives children a feeling of accomplishment, develops a commitment to something alive and helps them stay away from the malls, bowling alleys and other decadent hang outs.

Gerry Martin works with kids from the age of 9 to 16. His camps involve a structured introduction to nature and the wilderness, where city kids learn about survival, the dos and don'ts in the outdoors and get "hands-on experiences in nature and leave with a certain connect with the environment." Activities involve tree climbing, trekking, camping, direction finding, birdwatching, among a host of others. For more information, call 09845437337.

5 Fun-Filled Outdoor Activities For Camping With Kids

When camping with kids, what activities are best? There are the old standbys of hiking, fishing, swimming, and kayaking. For parents, these activities can be as useful as Badge Clips. But what about the times between those activities? There are the times when your child is waiting for a meal to be served. There are the times after dinner when there is not enough time or daylight to go on a major camping activity. And there are times when your kids just need a break from "regular" camping activities. Regardless of when they are used, these activities will ensure that there is never a dull moment for your kids, during the next family camping trip:

1. Making skits a hit. Kids love to be in the limelight, so camping skits give them the opportunity to do their best Shakespearean impersonation around the campfire. You can find several camp skit scripts on the Internet. Make sure that you rehearse the skits with your kids. One child can even serve as a narrator, to make the skit more dramatic. When your kids perform the skit for you, make sure that each of them is ready for his or her part. Also, the older kids can help the younger kids, and particularly with lines.

2. Mother Nature up close and personal. A Coleman for Kids Nature Viewfinder makes an excellent tool to allow your little ones to explore their world. Within the campground, they can examine the soil, plants, sticks, rocks, and insects in the area. Also, they can investigate the grain in the picnic table, and count the knotholes it contains. You can then teach your kid about how knotholes can help to estimate a tree's age.

3. North by northeast. First, all the children must learn where North is on the compass. Have them choose one object that is directly north, south, east, and west. A chosen leader then shouts out one of the four directions. Then the kids must race to the object that is in that particular direction. The child who last touches the object is eliminated from the game. After a few rounds of the game, you can add the intercardinal points (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, and Southwest). Then add a new object in each of those four locations, to make it more challenging.

4. Making an impression. Drawing and coloring make excellent activities for kids, and this activity allows them to nurture their artistic skills. Along with your Clear Vinyl Badge Clips, make sure to pack some blank sheets of paper; and colored pencils or a pack of crayons. At the campground, have your child collect objects with textures, such as leaves, tree bark, and stones. The kids should gently rub the pencil or crayon over the image, allowing an image to magically appear on the paper. Put a label on each picture, to remember what it is, who made it, and where he or she made it.

5. Beyond marshmallows. With this activity, children do not cook using a campfire. They can eat the campfire itself! Gather a paper plate, fork, spoon, and a cup of clear water for each kid. The ingredients should include coconut (shredded), licorice, pretzel sticks, raisins, and red hots candies. The plate is the campfire site, the spoon is a shovel, the fork is a rake, and the cup is a water bucket. Meanwhile, raisins form the fire ring, coconut is the tinder (for starting the fire), kindling should be represented by pretzel sticks, and a sprinkle of red hots signify the campfire's coals.

Family camping trips can be about more than hiking. Using some fun activities can make camping as effective as practical Mylar Badge Clips. Happy family camping!
